RESUMEN

Abstract In aquatic environments, dams are considered one of the main threats to fish species, acting as an environmental filter for certain functional traits. Although there is some predictability in the composition of the functional traits in reservoirs, it is hypothesized that the environmental filters imposed by evolutionary processes, linked to the characteristics of the basins, are determinant for the functional composition of the traits in reservoirs. For this we performed a PCoA using the functional traits composition matrix of the reservoirs. We used PERMANOVA to test the difference in functional composition between basins. We performed the same process for the species composition matrix to compare the patterns. In this study, there were taxonomic and functional differences among reservoirs inserted in different basins. It was observed that the basin is a determining factor for the functional structure of fish assemblage in reservoirs. When compared, functional and taxonomic structures follow the same pattern, although functionally the reservoir tends to be more similar. These results reinforce the idea that reservoirs act as filters for functional traits (e.g., related with reproduction, feeding and habitat use), although there is a great influence of evolutionary processes related to the basin's characteristics and origin of the ichthyofaunistic province.

RESUMEN

Molybdenum carbide is an interesting and versatile material, which has important applications in the metal matrix industry as a reinforcement material, as well as in the catalytic field. Though many papers suggest different methodologies for adding cobalt to the carbide structure aiming either to increase catalytic activity or enhancing mechanical proprieties such as ductility, etc. no straightforward evaluation is available. In the present paper two doping methodologies were studied: via solid state mixture of powders and via wet impregnation. Ammonium molybdate [(NH4)2MoO4] and cobalt nitrate [Co(NO3)2·6H2O] were used as starting materials and the doping process was carried out before carburization reaction. Those materials were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRF and XRD. The carbo-reduction products' were evaluated on XRD and XRF basis. Doped precursors' evaluation showed that the wet impregnated doped materials presented smaller particle sizes, were more homogeneous and retained more cobalt than the solid state doped ones. However, final products' assessment indicated that the solid state methodology was able to retain a greater dopant percentage according to XRF evaluation, and XRD data indicated a more intrinsic addition of the dopant to the carbide structure. In addition, no significant changes on particle size could be attributed to any of the methodologies, both producing Mo2C of approximately 30 nm.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of inheritance and the clinical features in a large family with Waardenburg syndrome type I (WS1), detailing the dental abnormalities and screening for PAX3 mutations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To characterize the pattern of inheritance and clinical features, 29 family members were evaluated by dermatologic, ophthalmologic, otorhinolaryngologic and orofacial examination. Molecular analysis of the PAX3 gene was performed. RESULTS: The pedigree of the family, including the last four generations, was constructed and revealed non-consanguineous marriages. Out of 29 descendants, 16 family members showed features of WS1, with 9 members showing two major criteria indicative of WS1. Five patients showed white forelock and iris hypopigmentation, and four showed dystopia canthorum and iris hypopigmentation. Two patients had hearing loss. Dental abnormalities were identified in three family members, including dental agenesis, conical teeth and taurodontism. Sequencing analysis failed to identify mutations in the PAX3 gene. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm that WS1 was transmitted in this family in an autosomal dominant pattern with variable expressivity and high penetrance. The presence of dental manifestations, especially tooth agenesis and conical teeth which resulted in considerable aesthetic impact on affected individuals was a major clinical feature. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This article reveals the presence of well-defined dental changes associated with WS1 and tries to establish a possible association between these two entities showing a new spectrum of WS1.

RESUMEN

Tubal sterilization is the most common contraceptive method used by Brazilian HIV-positive women. This cross sectional study describes the main reasons why HIV-positive women decide to be sterilized and identifies factors associated with choosing sterilization in HIV-positive women in Ceará, northeast Brazil. Data from 229 non-sterilized women, 80 women sterilized before HIV diagnosis and 48 women sterilized after diagnosis were analysed. Of the women sterilized after HIV diagnosis, 96% had the procedure done in the postpartum, during a caesarean section. No desire for more children was the most common appointed reason to be sterilized (39.6%), followed by medical recommendation because of HIV (31.3%). Seventy-nine women (28.5%) had a child after HIV diagnosis. Of those, 46 (58.2%) were sterilized in the postpartum. Factors associated with sterilization for HIV-positive women were: having a child after diagnosis (AOR: 120.9; 95%CI: 27.8-525.4) and having at least three children (AOR: 2.8; 95%CI: 1.1-7.1). It is recommended that non-coercive counselling should be provided so that HIV-positive women can make informed decisions on their reproductive options.

RESUMEN

We assessed the quality of hand hygiene among healthcare workers at a pediatrics hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Hand hygiene was performed in 491 (34%) of 1,455 opportunities. Of these hand hygiene events, correct performance was observed in only 173 (35%). Multivariate analysis revealed that correct performance of hand hygiene was associated with the use of an alcohol-based product and a lack of jewelry (for all events) and employment in an infirmary with a comparatively higher ratio of nurses to patients (for events involving nurses).

RESUMEN

The rectal prolapse is very common in children under 3 years old. Rectal mucosae herniated in to the anal canal. The ethiologic causes are diarrhea, intestinal parasitosis, obstipation and desnutrition. The effort during the defecation, prolonged diarrhea and obstipation are important contribucting factors. The treatment in the majority of cases is medical treating factors like desnutrition, diarrheia and parasitosis. The authors report a case of a 3-month-old child with chronic diarrhea, severe desnutrition and recurrent rectal prolapse with perforation hole. This is a rare complication and considerations are made regarding the management of the case

RESUMEN

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a rare viral-induced demyelinating disease associated to immunodeficiency. A 10-year-old boy with AIDS is reported, who developed subacute cerebellar signs and symptoms with multiple cranial nerve involvement and dementia. A computed tomography scan revealed a focal nonenhancing area of low attenuation in the cerebellum. On magnetic resonance imaging high signal lesions in T2 weighted sequences were shown. The biopsy of one of those lesions showed the typical histological findings of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. It seems important to consider this diagnosis in children with AIDS who present with progressive neurological features.

RESUMEN

The relationship between auditory-evoked potentials and the ethanol withdrawal syndrome was investigated in alcoholic inpatients using dipole source analysis. It was found that the increase in N1/P2 amplitude during withdrawal was positively correlated to the general severity of the withdrawal, but not to single symptoms such as seizures. Monitoring of initial changes in the auditory-evoked N1/P2 amplitude may be of predictive value concerning the withdrawal severity of alcoholic patients.

RESUMEN

Vitreoretinal retraction treated by silicone oil injections to provide internal tamponade after vitrectomy showed total reapplication in 28.2%, persistent residual detachment with a flat posterior pole in 18.2%, and a measurable visual acuity in 40%, including 10% of patients in show it was superior to 2/10. When immediate postoperative visual acuity could be measured this good result remained stable. When relapse occurred in spite of the presence of the silicone, it involved patients with the lowest postoperative visual acuity due to progressive major retinal fibrosis. These findings suggest that silicone oil injection is a valid procedure for treatment of retinal detachment requiring internal tamponade, and that perhaps its earlier use is indicated. Part 2 discusses its tolerance of this material.

RESUMEN

A retrospective study of 36 cases of retinal detachment with vitreoretinal retraction, greatly improved immediately after intravitreal cavity injection of silicone was definitely responsible for two complications: cataract and chronic corneal edema. Their onset requires routine extraction of the silicone, recurrence of the retinal detachment developing in only 50% of cases. Used as a transient procedure, the injection of silicone into the vitreal cavity appears to be a relatively simple surgical procedure for detachments requiring prolonged internal tamponade.
